Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
